e who has suffered from addiction. The program will also include reflectio
n of the path from addiction to recovery as a form of transition from dest
ruction to redemption.
Participants will include: Rabbi David M. G lickman\, Congregation Beth Shalom\, who will share the story of his broth er’s struggles with addiction\; Mia Cohen\, a recording artist and social media branding specialist currently working for Jewish Family and Career S ervices in Atlanta\; a college student\; an adult who has struggled with a ddiction\; and Marla Kauffman\, executive director and founder of Jewish A ddiction Awareness Network (JAAN)\, whose son is in a long-term recovery f rom substance use disorder. Kauffman has been active in the Seattle Jewish community since relocating there with her husband\, Joe\, in November 201 9.
\nSarah Link Ferguson\, development officer at First Call and mem ber of Congregation Koi Ami\, will moderate the discussion. Ferguson is al so a member of the recovery community and has written about her experience as a Jewish person in recovery for outlets such as Tablet magazine and th e Temper. She is passionate about destigmatizing issues such as mental ill ness and substance use disorder especially within the Jewish community.
\n“We are excited to hold this important community discussion especial ly at this time. Talking about addiction has always been somewhat of a tab oo subject in the Jewish community\, but the number of individuals with su bstance abuse disorder has dramatically increased due to the pandemic\,” s aid Rabbi Jonathan Rudnick\, Community Chaplain at Jewish Family Services and co-organizer of the event. “We are hoping this will be the beginning o f many more discussions and a pathway to help for many individuals.”

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia w ith approximately 5.8 million Americans are living with this disease and t he number is projected to nearly triple to 14 million people by 2060 accor ding to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
\nLearn how to recognize the common signs of Alzheimer’s disease when the Learn Laugh & Love series continues with a hybrid online and in-person presentation\, “The 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s.”

\nTake time for personal reflection\, intr ospection and contemplation for the upcoming Jewish New Year during the Se rvice of Spiritual Renewal for the High Holidays.
\nRabbi Rudnick\, Jewish community chaplain\, and Lezlie Zucker\, music coordinator for Cong regation Beth Torah will lead this meaningful and uplifting service which will include traditional and contemporary prayers\, songs and readings. Th e service will also include moments for personal reflection and meaningful closure of the current year\, combined with words of hope for the year ah ead.
\nIn accordance with most recent CDC guidelines\, individuals p lanning to attend the service in person must wear masks regardless of vacc ination status. Masks will be provided for participants who need them. RSV Ps are required by emailing chaplaincy@jfskc.org.
