Seroj Terian
Ever since he was a little boy, Seroj Terian liked to tinker. He would take things apart and, without a set of instructions, put all the pieces back together again.
Today, Seroj is still taking things apart and reassembling them as the Community Handyman for the Help@Home program of Jewish Family Services. Help@Home is the agency’s program geared to helping those 65-plus to remain living independently in their homes. The program’s handyman provides assistance with minor home repairs and other tasks for Help@Home members.
Seroj joined JFS at the start of 2009. Prior to that, he honed his skills operating his own remodeling business. Before entering the remodeling trade, he spent seven years with Sprint as a technical writer.
“I enjoyed working with my hands,” said Seroj, “and I was ready to get out of my cubicle in the corporate world.”
In addition to being “Mr. Fix-it,” Seroj is skilled in the area of computers after spending nearly 10 years in the IT industry. He holds bachelor degrees in Mathematics and English from the University of Kansas.
So what exactly does a Community Handyman do?
“I fix what’s broken,” Seroj said. “I make sure when our members need something done around the house that I am there or I refer them to other resources and vendors we have checked out for them.”
Seroj likes the flexibility of the job.
“There are always a variety of things to do every day,” he said. “Coming up with a solution to a new problem is challenging.”
One of the things Seroj enjoys the most is spending time with Help@Home members.
“It’s nice getting to know our members and hearing about their families and their stories,” Seroj said. “It’s great to learn from a different generation.”
Members appreciate Seroj, as well.
“Seroj knows everything,” said member Faye Anthony. “My house is safe now with the work he’s done for us, and it’s rewarding to get things accomplished.”
