Our food choices have a profound effect how we feel not only physically but mentally, emotionally and psychologically. Learn about ways to incorporate plant-based meals into your daily diet during Learn, Laugh & Love: “The Surprising Benefits of Plant Based Nutrition,” at 1 p.m. Oct. 21 presented by Jewish Family Services and The J.
“Many of the nutrients we need to survive and thrive are not only found in plants first, but they are actually better absorbed and digested. Studies have shown that a plant-based diet can positively impact feelings of anxiety, depression and fatigue,” said Lauren Glass, LCSW, with JFS, and presenter of the virtual event.
Glass is also certified in plant-based nutrition and is a certified yoga Instructor. She has many years of experience working with older adults, children and families. Glass gravitates towards cognitive behavioral therapy and solution focused therapy in her work. Kemper Museum Docent, Lydumyla Savinkova, will lead attendees “Exploring our emotions through contemporary art.” Participants in this 1-hour online tour will take note of the expression of an artist’s emotions through a physical form in diverse artworks from Kemper Museum’s Permanent collection. Lyudmyla will invite discussion and provide information about modern and contemporary artists and their practices, focused on self-exploration and emotion. Contemporary art allows us to glimpse into the artist’s inner world and realize the connection of the spontaneous and the deliberate in the choices an artist has made. What emotions in us as viewers may these artworks evoke in response?

Kemper Museum Docent, Lynne Bock, leads “Social and personal narratives in contemporary art” for the December virtual edition of Learn Laugh & Love. How does social history combine with the stories of individual artists in contemporary artworks? How are these stories about self and society visible to us? Our impressions of stories told by artworks may change over time. Let’s look at works from Kemper Museum’s Permanent Collection to explore together how we find social histories and artists’ stories in works of contemporary art. This tour will include works from our current exhibition celebrating the Missouri Bicentennial.
