It’s been a nearly a decade since Chris Wiley began volunteering for Jewish Family Services helping older adult clients with their technology needs– and JFS is so happy he did!
Wiley has a strong background in technology services – setting up, fixing and repairing those “gadgets” we all take for granted, but sometimes can’t figure out on our own. Wiley would fix computers in his free time and wanted to give back to others. JFS has been the lucky recipient of his thoughtfulness.
“Many times, older adults can’t leave their home for health reasons,” Wiley said. “A computer is a connection to the outside world. It gives them a chance to talk and see others they would not otherwise be able to meet. It also helps himthem stay connected to critical services such as pharmaceutical, medical, or financial services. I am happy to get a chance to help keep them connected.”
Wiley currently works for Tech Cause KC that repairs old computers and recycles others to reduce waste and gets equipment to people in need. When he’s not at work, Wiley enjoys playing video games and spending time with his wife of 13 years, Hattie.
While he is helping others through JFS, Wiley said he gets so much from volunteering.
“I meet a lot of different people while volunteering,” Wiley said. “They have shared their knowledge, experiences, cultures, languages and more with me. They have all been very special to me.”
JFS Help@Home client Ron Myers has received help from Wiley with his computer “stuff”.
“He goes the extra mile,” Myers said. “God love that man and God love you people for helping me on there,” Myers said.
“Providing technology support is a huge benefit of our Help@Home membership,” said Rachel Ohlhausen, JFS Director of Program Operations. “Volunteers like Chris support our clients from small things like connecting to a printer, to more in-depth support like learning how to get their emails to a new address. Since he joined us in 2012, Chris has provided 736 tech support jobs for our clients. This program wouldn’t be what it is without him,” she said.
Working as tech support for JFS clients is Wiley’s way of giving back to the community.
“It’s a great chance to build helpful skill sets and make lifelong friends,” Wiley said.
